Crochet Snowman Spiral Ornament: Free Amigurumi Pattern with Beaded Edge
Amigurumi Pattern ยท Christmas Ornament ยท Holiday Dรฉcor ยท Intermediate

๐ B. Introduction
This crochet snowman spiral ornament is a hanging ribbon of blue and white that twists downward from a pearl-centered snowflake. Three tiny amigurumi snowmen sit along the coils, along with plush gift boxes, dangling mini snowflakes and silver icicle drops. A row of silver beads runs along the outer edge of the ribbon and catches the light from any angle. Hung from a branch, a window latch or a tree, it reads as one tall, elegant winter piece rather than a cluster of small ornaments.
The spiral itself is one long strip of crochet, with the increases packed into the first row. That makes the outer edge twice the length of the inner edge, and the strip curls on its own. The snowmen are worked in fingering-weight cotton on a 1.75 mm hook, so they finish about 1ยฝ inches (4 cm) tall. Each one has a striped hat, a scarf, bead eyes and a carrot-nose stitch.
This pattern suits gifting, mantel and window dรฉcor, and craft-fair stock, since the spiral is quick compared with the tiny parts. It also works as a nursery or classroom winter display, and as a keepsake for a first Christmas.
Personalizing is easy. Swap the blue for red and cream, or for pink and white. Add or remove snowmen, replace the gift boxes with tiny stockings, or change the beads to gold. For a bolder version, work the same pattern in sport-weight cotton with a 2.25 mm hook, and keep the same counts.
๐ C. Main Pattern Overview
The ornament has six parts, made in this order:
- ๐ Spiral ribbon. One flat strip, 120 chains wide at the inner edge, which curls into a twist.
- โ๏ธ Snowflake topper. A blue six-point star layered with a smaller white one, with a pearl at the center.
- โ Mini snowmen (make 3). Each has a head and body worked as one piece, plus a hat and a scarf.
- ๐ Plush gift boxes (make 2). Each is two small squares seamed together, with a stitched white ribbon and a bow.
- โ๏ธ Mini snowflakes (make 2). Tiny six-spoke flakes.
- ๐ Beaded dangles and icicles. Two beaded strands carry the mini snowflakes, and three silver icicle charms hang from the outer edge.

๐ฏ D. Skill Level
Intermediate. The stitches are all basic, but the scale is small and the pattern uses several less-common techniques.
- Working tight stitches with a 1.75 mm hook in fingering-weight cotton
- Pre-stringing beads and working bead single crochet along a long row
- Counting a long 240-stitch row accurately (stitch markers help)
- Small amigurumi in the round, with invisible decreases
- Changing colors in flat rows and in the round
- Surface embroidery: French knots and straight stitches
- Sewing many small parts onto a flexible spiral
๐ E. Finished Size
| Part | Approximate size |
|---|---|
| Hanging length of spiral (loop at top to end of strip) | 14 in (36 cm) |
| Overall hanging length, topper to lowest icicle | 17โ19 in (43โ48 cm) |
| Ribbon width | ยพโ1 in (2โ2.5 cm) |
| Blue snowflake topper | 2ยผ in (5.7 cm) across |
| White snowflake overlay | 1ยฝ in (3.8 cm) across |
| Each snowman | 1ยฝ in (4 cm) tall |
| Each gift box | ยพ in (2 cm) square |
| Each mini snowflake | 1 in (2.5 cm) across |
Size depends on yarn weight, hook size and tension. It also depends on how far you stretch the spiral when blocking: a looser stretch gives more coils, and a longer stretch gives fewer. Expect about 4โ6 visible turns.
Design choice: the 2:1 ratio between the outer and inner edges (240 to 120 stitches) is my own. It gives a pitch of roughly 2ยฝโ3 in (6โ7.5 cm) per turn on this ribbon width.
๐งฎ F. Gauge
Gauge isn’t critical here. What matters is that your stitches are tight and even, so the stuffing doesn’t show and the ribbon holds its curl. My sample gauge is about 9 sc and 9 rows per inch (3.5 per cm) in fingering-weight cotton with a 1.75 mm hook. If your ribbon comes out wider or looser, go down a hook size rather than changing the stitch counts. If the beads won’t slide on, go up a bead size rather than loosening your tension.
๐งถ G. Required Yarn Amounts
Amounts are approximate and include tails.
| Color | Used for | Approximate amount |
|---|---|---|
| ๐งต Cornflower Blue | Ribbon rows 1, 2, 7 and 8; blue topper star; hats; scarves; gift squares | 55 yd (50 m) |
| ๐งต Snow White | Ribbon rows 5โ6; snowmen; hat brims; white topper star; mini snowflakes; gift ribbons and bows | 55 yd (50 m) |
| ๐งต Pale Frost (light blue) | Ribbon rows 3โ4 (hdc) | 25 yd (23 m) |
| ๐งต Orange scrap | Carrot noses | 3 yd (3 m) |
| ๐งต Black embroidery thread | French-knot buttons | 3 yd (3 m) |
| Polyester fiberfill | Snowmen and gift boxes | a small handful (about 0.2 oz / 6 g) |
Total yarn estimate: about 140โ150 yd (130โ137 m) of cotton, plus scraps. One 50 g ball each of Blue and White is plenty.
๐งฐ H. Materials
- ๐งต Fingering-weight (#1) cotton in Cornflower Blue, Snow White and Pale Frost, plus orange scrap yarn and black embroidery thread
- 1.75 mm crochet hook (about steel size 6)
- About 150 silver 6/0 glass seed beads (4 mm) with holes large enough to take your yarn: 120 for the ribbon edge, 24 for the dangles and 3 for the icicle ties
- A big-eye needle or bead threader, for stringing the beads on yarn
- Six black 11/0 seed beads (snowman eyes)
- One 6 mm pearl bead (topper center)
- Three silver acrylic icicle charms (about 1โ1ยฝ in / 2.5โ4 cm)
- Silver beading thread or clear nylon cord, about 3 yd (3 m)
- A thin beading needle
- Polyester fiberfill
- A yarn needle, scissors, pins, and about 8 stitch markers
- A cardboard tube or dowel (about 1ยฝ in / 4 cm across, 18 in / 45 cm long) for shaping
- Optional: fabric stiffener spray, and pink pencil or blush for cheeks
๐๏ธ Supplies We Recommend: a 1.75 mm steel hook, fingering-weight mercerized cotton, silver 6/0 seed beads, a bag of polyester fiberfill, and beading thread. (Placeholder: add your affiliate links here.)
โ ๏ธ Safety note: The beads, pearl and charms are small parts and a choking hazard. This is a decorative ornament, not a toy. Keep it away from young children and pets.

๐ J. Notes Before You Begin
- Rounds vs. rows. The ribbon is worked in turned rows. Everything else (snowmen, hats) is worked in continuous spiral rounds unless it says to join. Use a stitch marker to mark the end of each round.
- Right side. Odd-numbered ribbon rows (1, 3, 5, 7) are worked with the right side facing, and the beads sit on that side.
- Stitch markers. Place one every 30 stitches in Row 1 and Row 7 to keep the count honest.
- Pre-stringing beads. Thread all 120 beads onto the Cornflower Blue yarn before you start Row 7. Put them on a few at a time with the threader, and push them down the yarn out of the way.
- Color changes in the ribbon. Change colors at the end of a row by pulling the new color through on the last stitch. Carry the unused yarn loosely up the short end of the strip, since the ends are hidden at assembly.
- Stuffing. Stuff the snowmen firmly but not so hard that the stitches gap. Stuff the gift boxes lightly, so they stay plush and flat-ish.
- Sewing tails. Leave a long tail (about 8 in / 20 cm) on every piece that gets sewn on.
- Design choices. The 2:1 ribbon ratio, the chunky “gift box” squares and the bead spacing are my own design decisions, not details copied from the video.

๐จ L. Styling / Assembly / Stability / Final Shaping
Recommended assembly order:
- Sew the snowflake topper to the start of the ribbon (the chain end). Overlap about 1 in (2.5 cm) of the ribbon under the topper.
- Sew on the three snowmen, about 15, 55 and 105 sts along the inner edge (Row 8), measured from the topper end. Stitch through the snowman’s back and the ribbon’s inner edge.
- Sew on the two gift boxes, around stitch 35 and stitch 80 along the inner edge, tucked slightly under the coil so they hang neatly.
- Tie the two beaded snowflake strands to the ribbon, around stitch 70 and stitch 100 along the inner edge. Let them hang freely.
- Sew the three icicle drops to the beaded outer edge, at about stitch 60, 120 and 180.
- Tie off the bottom end of the ribbon with a neat knot and weave in the tails.
Stability: Hang the finished ornament and check that it doesn’t tilt. If a snowman droops, add a small stitch through the back of its body and the ribbon edge to anchor it. If the coils sag, mist lightly with fabric stiffener while it hangs.
Symmetry check: Look at each snowman’s face, hat and scarf from a few feet away. If one tilts, adjust the stitches that hold it.
โ Final Shaping Checklist
- โ Beads sit on the right side of the beaded edge, evenly spaced
- โ Snowman faces are level and matching
- โ Hats cover R12โR15 on every snowman
- โ Scarves are snug, with tails facing the same way
- โ Gift boxes are lightly stuffed and bows are centered
- โ Dangles and icicles hang freely without tangling
- โ The topper is centered and the pearl is secure
- โ All tails woven in, with no loose ends visible
- โ The spiral hangs in a smooth twist
๐ก M. Helpful Crochet Tips
- ๐ก Use a bead that fits. Test one bead on your yarn before buying 150. If it won’t slide freely, go up a bead size.
- ๐ก Mark the bead row. Place a marker every 30 sts in Row 7 so a missed bead doesn’t throw off the whole edge.
- ๐ก Keep tension tight on the inc row. Row 1 sets the curl, so loose stitches there will flatten the spiral.
- ๐ก Block with a tube. A wet-block or stiffener spray over a cardboard tube gives a much stronger spiral than pinning flat.
- ๐ก Stuff the snowmen before the last 3 rounds. The opening is too small afterward.
- ๐ก Sew the hat before the scarf. The scarf then covers the join cleanly.
- ๐ก Anchor heavy pieces at two points. Gift boxes and snowmen should be sewn with at least two stitches each, so they don’t pivot.
- ๐ก Hang it while you finish. Seeing the ornament vertical makes it easier to judge where each piece belongs.
- ๐ก Use matching thread. Silver thread blends with the beads. Use white for the snowmen.
๐งผ N. Care Instructions
Spot-clean with a damp cloth. Cotton may be hand-washed gently, but fabric stiffener and glass beads make washing a bad idea for this piece, so avoid it. Air-dry flat if it does get wet. Store it in a box or hang it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade the blue. Keep the beaded edge from snagging on rough surfaces when packing it away.
Closing Section
This ornament turns small winter details into one long, graceful piece that moves with every draft. Make it in classic blue and white, or switch to your own colorway and let the silver beads carry the sparkle. It looks right on a Christmas tree, in a window, or hanging from a branch above a mantel. โ R. FAQ
How long does the crochet snowman spiral ornament take to make?
Plan on a weekend. The ribbon and snowmen take the most time, and the beaded edge and assembly add a few hours.
Can I use a thicker yarn?
Yes. Sport-weight cotton and a 2.25 mm hook keep all the counts the same, but every part will finish larger and the spiral will be wider.
What hook size should I use?
A 1.75 mm hook gives the tight, tidy stitches this pattern needs. Go down a size if your stuffing shows through.
Is this ornament safe for kids?
No. The beads, pearl and charms are small parts, so it is decorative only and should be kept away from young children and pets.
How do I get the spiral to hold its shape?
Wet-block the strip around a tube and let it dry completely. A light mist of fabric stiffener helps it keep the curl.
Can I make it without beads?
Yes. Work the bead row as plain sc, 240 sts. The ornament will have a softer edge but the same size.
What if my beads are too big for my yarn?
Use a smaller bead, or pre-string them on thin silver thread and crochet with the thread held alongside the yarn.
Can I change the colors?
Yes. Any three colors work, as long as the middle stripe (Pale Frost) contrasts with the other two.
