Crochet Harvest Coasters Pattern: Free Pumpkin, Sunflower, Maple Leaf & Acorn Set

Crochet Pattern ยท Fall Home Dรฉcor ยท Easy / Advanced Beginner ยท Set of 4

๐Ÿ“– Introduction

These crochet harvest coasters turn a coffee table into a small autumn still life: a rust pumpkin with a sage-green stem, a mustard-gold sunflower with a chocolate center, a five-lobed maple leaf, and a cream acorn with a ridged brown cap. Each one is worked flat in worsted cotton. A warm mug sits on top of it without a wobble.

The set is worth making over a generic round coaster because each design has one recognizable feature. The sunflower has a dark seed center ringed by tall petals. The maple leaf has five pointed lobes fanning from a small disc. The acorn has a textured, slightly oversized cap. The pumpkin has three stitched rib lines and a little leaf. Together they read as one cohesive harvest collection and are still quick to make.

The pieces suit hostess gifts, Thanksgiving table settings, a mantel or tray vignette, teacher gifts, and craft-fair stock. A set of four photographs well, and the pieces sell individually. Cotton yarn is the best choice here because it is absorbent, holds its shape, and tolerates warm mugs.

Personalization is easy. Swap rust for deep plum or sage for a moodier palette. Make a second set in cream and gold for a neutral farmhouse look. Use a 4.5 mm hook for a looser, larger coaster. Add a little embroidered “vein” detail to the leaf. Make only the shape you like and repeat it in a set of six.

๐Ÿ” Main Pattern Overview

This is a four-in-one pattern. Each coaster has its own complete module, so you can start with any one.

  • ๐ŸŒป Sunflower Coaster: worked in the round from a magic ring. Brown center, gold petals.
  • ๐Ÿ Maple Leaf Coaster: a round center with five lobes worked in flat rows.
  • ๐ŸŒฐ Acorn Coaster: a cream nut and a ridged brown cap, worked flat and sewn together, plus a tiny stem.
  • ๐ŸŽƒ Pumpkin Coaster: a rounded flat pumpkin with stitched rib lines, a sage stem, and a leaf.

Time estimate: about 45โ€“75 minutes per coaster, or roughly 4โ€“5 hours for the full set, plus blocking time.

๐ŸŽฏ Skill Level

Easy (advanced beginner). Every stitch is basic. The set asks for comfort with turning flat rows, increasing and decreasing at row edges, and joining new colors.

Techniques used:

  • Magic ring (MR)
  • Single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet
  • Increasing and decreasing (including a single-crochet three-together)
  • Working in the back loop only (BLO) for texture
  • Changing colors between rounds
  • Basic seaming (whip stitch) and surface slip stitch embroidery

๐Ÿ“ Finished Size

With the recommended yarn and hook, approximate finished sizes are:

CoasterImperialMetric
๐ŸŒป Sunflower4.5 in across11.5 cm across
๐Ÿ Maple Leaf5 in across12.5 cm across
๐ŸŒฐ Acorn4 in wide ร— 5 in tall (with stem)10 ร— 12.5 cm
๐ŸŽƒ Pumpkin4.5 in wide ร— 4.25 in tall (with stem)11.5 ร— 10.5 cm

What changes the size: yarn weight and brand, hook size, how tightly you stitch, and how firmly you block. Moving to a 4.5 mm hook gives roughly a 10% larger coaster, and a 3.5 mm hook gives a smaller, stiffer one. Cotton blocks a little larger than it looks fresh off the hook.

๐Ÿงฎ Gauge

Exact gauge is not critical for coasters. Tight, even tension matters more, because loose stitches let the coaster curl and sag under a mug.

Approximate gauge: 15 sc and 17 rows = 4 in (10 cm) with a 4.0 mm hook in worsted cotton.

๐Ÿ’ก Quick check: after Sunflower R6, the brown center should measure about 3 in (7.5 cm) across. If it is much larger, drop a hook size. If it is much smaller, go up a half size.

๐Ÿงถ Required Yarn Amounts

๐Ÿงฐ Materials

  • 4.0 mm (US G-6) crochet hook
  • Worsted weight cotton yarn in Rust, Mustard Gold, Chocolate Brown, Cream, and Sage Green (see above)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • 1โ€“2 stitch markers
  • Blocking mat and rust-proof pins (optional but strongly recommended)
  • Spray bottle for wet blocking

โš ๏ธ Safety note: These are decorative coasters, not toys. They contain no safety eyes or small hard parts, but the sewn stem and leaf pieces should be secured well and kept away from small children and pets.

โš ๏ธ Heat note: Use cotton, not acrylic. Acrylic can soften or melt under a hot mug. Do not place hot pots or pans on these coasters.

๐Ÿ“ Notes Before You Begin

  • Spiral rounds vs. flat rows: The sunflower and the maple leaf center are worked in continuous spiral rounds. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go. The acorn, pumpkin, and maple lobes are worked in flat rows. Turn at the end of every row and chain 1, which does not count as a stitch.
  • Round/row format: Rounds read “R1:”, and flat rows read “Row 1:”. The number in parentheses is your stitch count, so check it at the end of every round or row.
  • Color changes: Pull the new color through on the last yarn-over of the final stitch in the old color for a clean change. Where a round says “join with a sc,” attach with a slip knot on your hook and sc into the stated stitch.
  • Tails: Leave 6 in (15 cm) tails on pieces that will be sewn. Crochet over short starting tails where you can to reduce weaving.
  • Tension: Keep your tension firm. Coasters should feel dense and flat.
  • Blocking: Cotton relaxes with blocking. Plan to wet block every piece, since it makes the shapes crisp and flat.
  • Design choices (not visually verified): The video’s pumpkin was a plump stuffed piece, so this flat version is my own design choice. All lobe counts, cap shaping, and rib placements are original constructions.

๐Ÿงต Assembling the acorn

Lay the cap over the nut so the cap’s foundation edge sits across Row 10 of the nut. The cap overhangs the nut by about one stitch on each side. Pin, then whip stitch along the cap’s bottom edge through both layers. Tack the cap’s sides lightly to the nut. Sew the stem to the center top of the cap, over the 3 center stitches of Row 9.

๐ŸŽƒ Pumpkin Coaster

Makes: 1 coaster. Yarn: Rust (body), Sage Green (stem and leaf).

Rows 7โ€“10: sc in each st across. (17) Ch 1, turn after each row.
Row 11: dec, 13 sc, dec. (15) Ch 1, turn.
Row 12: dec, 11 sc, dec. (13) Ch 1, turn.
Row 13: dec, 9 sc, dec. (11) Ch 1, turn.
Row 14: dec, 7 sc, dec. (9)

Fasten off and weave in.

๐Ÿงต Rib lines

On the front, count stitches across the widest rows (Rows 6โ€“10, 17 sts) and mark columns 5, 9, and 13. Holding Rust yarn at the back, insert your hook from the front at each marked column, starting in Row 3. Pull up a loop and sl st straight up through every row to Row 13. Fasten off at the back and weave in. This gives three evenly spaced rib lines.

๐ŸŒฟ Stem (Sage Green)
Row 1: Ch 4. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 2 ch. (3) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 2โ€“4: sc in each st across. (3)

Fasten off, leaving a tail.

๐Ÿƒ Leaf (Sage Green)

Ch 6. Sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, dc in the next ch, 3 dc in the last ch. Rotate to work along the other side of the foundation chain: dc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, sc in the next ch, sl st in each of the next 2 ch. Fasten off, leaving a tail.

๐Ÿงต Assembling the pumpkin

Sew the stem to the top center of the body, over the 3 center stitches of Row 14. Sew the leaf at the base of the stem, with the tip angled outward.

๐ŸŽจ Styling / Assembly / Stability / Final Shaping

Recommended assembly order

  1. Finish all crochet pieces and weave in every tail that is not needed for sewing.
  2. Wet block each coaster: spritz until damp, pin to shape on a mat, and let dry completely.
  3. Sew the acorn cap to the nut, then attach the acorn stem.
  4. Sew the pumpkin stem to the body, then attach the leaf.
  5. Trim and weave in the remaining tails on the wrong side.

Styling: Stack the four coasters loosely, or fan them across a wooden tray with a candle and a mug on top of one. For photographs, place the pumpkin and acorn upright against a small sign or jar so their silhouettes read clearly.

Stability: Block every piece until fully dry so the edges lie flat. For the acorn, whip stitch both sides of the cap rather than just the foundation edge so it does not flap. If a lobe on the maple leaf curls, pin it flat and re-steam.

Final shaping checklist

  • โœ… All coasters lie flat on a table without rocking
  • โœ… Maple lobes are evenly spaced and pointed
  • โœ… Sunflower petals are even and the brown ring is visible
  • โœ… Acorn cap is centered and secure
  • โœ… Pumpkin rib lines are straight and evenly spaced
  • โœ… Stem and leaf are firmly attached
  • โœ… All loose ends are woven in

๐Ÿ’ก Helpful Crochet Tips

  • ๐Ÿ’ก Mark your rows. On the pumpkin, place a marker on the right-side rows. It makes the surface slip stitch rib lines much easier to place.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Keep the sunflower center tight. Pull the magic ring snug and tension firmly. A loose center makes the petals ruffle.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Count the maple lobe bases. Check that R5 has exactly 25 stitches before starting lobes, since five even groups depend on it.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Crochet over starting tails. On the maple lobes, work your first few stitches over the tail to avoid ten extra ends to weave.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Use BLO consistently on the acorn cap. Only Rows 2โ€“9 are in the back loop. Row 1 goes into the chain.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Pin the cap before sewing. Check the overhang on both sides and the angle before committing to stitches.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Block the maple leaf point by point. Pin each lobe tip outward for a crisp star shape.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Keep slip stitches loose on the pumpkin ribs. Tight slip stitches pucker the fabric.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Use a darker rust for ribs if you want more definition. Same-color ribs give a subtle look.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Make one test coaster first. The sunflower is the quickest way to check your gauge before committing to the whole set.

๐Ÿงผ Care Instructions

  • Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, or machine wash on gentle in a mesh bag.
  • Wash dark colors (Rust, Brown) separately from Cream and Gold, as they can bleed on the first wash.
  • Reshape and lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry or wring.
  • Store flat or loosely stacked away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
  • Spot clean spills quickly. Cotton absorbs liquid fast.

๐Ÿ‚ Closing

You now have a full harvest set: four small projects that look far more elaborate than they are. Make them in the colors that match your own table. Swap rust for plum, or gold for terracotta. Add a bow on a stack of four for a ready-to-give gift.

If you stitch them up, we would love to see your version. Tag your photos and share which coaster you made first.

โ“ FAQ

How big are these crochet harvest coasters?
They range from about 4 to 5 in (10โ€“12.5 cm) across, depending on the design and your tension.

What yarn is best for crochet coasters?
Worsted weight 100% cotton. It is absorbent, holds its shape, and tolerates warm mugs far better than acrylic.

Can I use a different hook size?
Yes. A 3.5 mm hook gives a smaller, stiffer coaster, and a 4.5 mm hook gives a larger, softer one.

Can I substitute acrylic yarn?
You can, but acrylic is less absorbent and can soften or melt under heat. Cotton is strongly recommended for anything meant to hold a hot mug.

How do I keep my coasters flat?
Keep your tension firm and wet block each piece, pinning to shape until it dries completely.

Are these patterns beginner-friendly?
They are best for advanced beginners. Every stitch is basic, but you need to be comfortable turning rows and working increases and decreases.

Can I make just one design?
Yes. Every coaster has its own complete module, so you can start with whichever you like.
